(1) What made you decide to become Halal-friendly?
We started an online Halal food store (http://www.smile-8.jp/) 3 years ago because we had many Muslims join the company.
We started our PJ Kitchen Car because there hasn’t really been an increase in the number of Halal-friendly dining options in Tokyo, and we thought that we could “provide Halal food that can be eaten anytime, anywhere” at Mosques, universities, and tourist spots, in order to spread Halal food not only to Muslims, but also to Japanese people.
(2) Your ingenuity?
We do not use any pork products in our dishes. All our meats are Halal meats. Rather than promoting an Halal menu or Muslim-friendly menu, we have simply increased our number of food choices and have published nutritional information so Muslims can make their own judgment.
※We also sell liquor, as we have non-Muslim customers.
(3) The response, and future prospects?
We are still not well known, and are not able to set up the truck regularly. However, a number of enquiries from users of our online Halal store and restaurant have been increasing.
In the future we hope to take the truck to tourist spots and festivals in which people from overseas participate, so that both Muslims and locals can enjoy Halal meals, as well as spread the word to Japanese people that “that delicious food you ate by chance was actually Halal food!”
